BG is a 52 year old woman. She has a history of gestational diabetes with return to euglycemia following delivery. Her last visit was 5 years ago. Today she returns for a wellness exam. She admits her diet habits are poor and she is not exercising. She is not currently taking any medications.
Exam: Weight 232 lb, height 5 ft 5 in, BMI 38.3, blood pressure 154/96.
Lab: Fasting blood sugar 112 mg/dl, total cholesterol 222 mg/dl, LDL 154 mg/dl, Tg 182 mg/dl, HDL 42 mg/dl.
Question 1: She would like to know her risk of being diagnosed with diabetes within a year.
She returns 5 years later. Medications are now Ramipril 10 mg/day, atorvastatin 20 mg/day, lorcaserin 10 mg/day, and metformin 1000 mg twice daily. Exercise is swimming 30 minutes 5 days weekly. She has significantly improved her diet.
Exam: Weight 215 lb, height 5 ft 5 in, BMI 35.8, blood pressure 132/82.
Lab: Fasting blood sugar 106 mg/dl, total, cholesterol 180 mg/dl, LDL 96 mg/dL, Tg 146 mg/dL, HDL 55 mg/dL.
